China House

China House, Salmiya, Kuwait

Driving around Salmiya with friends around dinner time, someone mentioned getting Chinese and we ended up at the China House.  Don't you just love impromptu decisions?  The little restaurant was full of diners and being asked to wait for a table affirmed that we'd picked a good place.  After all, Salmiya is chock-a-block full of little hole-in-the-wall restaurants that turn out to be real gems.

After a short wait, we were seated inside at the first table that became available.  The menu, though just a double sided sheet, had quite an extensive list of dishes (with pictures!) and it took us a good 15-20 minutes to decide on what to order.  Having my veg-hating strictly carnivorous husband on Lent also made things a little more challenging.

I should add that China House is pretty clear on the fact that they don't have any other branches in Kuwait, evidenced by the fact that this is proudly printed on their menus.  Copy cats beware!

After a lot of deliberation, we went with the Chicken and Corn Soup for the kids (KD 0.950).  The kids loved it and it went down easily with no fuss, however as an adult, it was bland and I wouldn't recommend it, hence the lack of a photo.

For the ones with more sophisticated taste-buds, we decided on the Veg Fried Noodles (KD 1.550), the Chicken Chopsuey (KD 1.950) and the China House Special Fried Noodles (KD 2.450) which contained a combination of various proteins.  Do not be fooled by these photos, those bowls are deep and amply filled!

I wasn't a big fan of the chopsuey, too many veges in it and it was just too sloppy for my taste, but both noodle dishes were YUM for lack of a better word.  I definitely need to go back and try out the rice dishes as I am very much a rice girl.

We also had the Beef Munchurian (KD 2.250) and the Chicken with Green Peppers (KD 2.150).  Funny enough, one of these dishes had been ordered as a "semi-gravy" dish, but both arrived looking pretty much the same.  I would've preferred the dishes to be a little less saucy (point to be remembered next time), but taste wise, they were both winners.

Our bill for 4 adults and 2 kids came up to just KD 12.350.  Now that's a bargain!  Definitely loved the food, perfectly seasoned, generous portions and simple but flavourful.  In fact, I've been recommending this place to anyone who will listen ever since our little visit.

China House can be found two lanes behind the Al Fanar mall in Salmiya.  Click here for their location on the map.
